This is one of my favorite young adult reads, Nix is a great author to introduce anyone to because his stories are pleasurable to devour. The Abhorsen Trilogy is one of his older-teen series (vs. the ongoing Keys to the Kingdom series for younger teens) that appeals to adult audiences who enjoy well thought-out dark stories. Also worth noting: both Philip Pullman and Lloyd Alexander give it thumbs up on the back cover. These are two highly repected and verrrrry different fantasy authors, which should give you an idea of the amazingness contained within the cover.

I loved this book because of its poetic language and haunting quality. I think Toni Morrison is an amazing writer.

Not as good as you'd hope. Sure, it has lesbian sex, but so does Nana, which is a much better novel.

All the recipes sound yummy, though some are just basics. I do appreciate how she writes about chocolate.

Read this and other reviews at Madison Says. This series was actually one of the first reviewed on my site, and it was the first reviewed by a “guest reviewer,” who just so happens to also be my sister. Last year, when Chelsea read these books, she RAVED about them. Begged me to read them. I said I would. Maybe. Someday. But who knew when. At that time, I wasn’t sure about Dystopian fiction. I just wasn’t sure I could get into it. I’ll admit, I’ve never read Hunger Games – seen the movie, yes – but just didn’t read the books. It just wasn’t something I felt I could connect with. Then I read Lauren Oliver’s Delirium books. Hold. The. Phone. Those books rocked my world. I knew I was now a Dystopian junkie. A lifer. I wanted to give the Divergent series a chance. While I wasn’t sure if I’d fall into the same kind of love as I did with LO’s series, because maybe I was just such a fan of LO’s words, I wanted to give it a shot, nonetheless. VERONICA ROTH BLEW ME AWAY. I won’t really even comment on the premise of the books too much, because really, I realize I’m probably close to the last person ever to read them. And that’s okay with me. Sometimes, it’s better to show up late than not at all. Right? However, if you do want a more thorough review and rundown of “what to expect,” check out Chelsea’s review from last year –> HERE! Anyway, I LOVED that it was set in a Dystopian Chicago. Living not far from the city, I loved being able to recognize the familiar places that Roth mentions … but with that other world twist. I loved the idea of the factions – and getting to choose where you’re going to go or if you’ll stay where you grew up. This reminded me of a harsh college choice. Some parents are set on their kids going to NYU for Med School, and they might choose to go to Berkeley for Creative Writing. This was how I related it in my head. I know it’s kind of a far reaching analogy, but whatever. It worked for me. “We believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another.” There were plenty of twists and turns and drama to keep my attention and keep me guessing. I love that in a book. The writing was flawless. I always find it so refreshing that in a Dystopian novel, where you might not feel you can make “real world” connections, they’re almost endless. The same thoughts and ideas can apply to our relationships, loves, families, friends, even if the world is run completely different. “Becoming fearless isn’t the point. That’s impossible. It’s learning how to control your fear, and how to be free from it.” Divergent introduces us to this world. And really, up until the last page, I felt like I was sorta kept guessing what was going to happen next. I truly felt I was part of Tris’s journey from the first page. “You think giving you a hug would give away too much?” he says. “You know,” I say. “I really don’t care.” I stand on my tiptoes and press my lips to his. It is the best moment of my life. Oh – and I’d be remiss not to mention Four. Goodness, I loved me some Four. I love the mystery surrounding him. I loved the way he handled Tris. I just love him. MMM MMM MMM. “I might be in love with you.” He smiles a little. “I’m waiting until I’m sure to tell you, though.” This is a must read book – but be prepared, you’ll definitely want to pick up Insurgent (book 2) as soon as you finish Divergent. I did. I needed more. Right away. Oh, and if you haven’t heard, which I doubt at this point, Divergent is currently being filmed in Chicago! It has a 2014 release date and stars Shailene Woodley as Tris and Theo James as Four.

It is evident that this book was written and edited by hand rather than on a computer or typewriter; it must have seemed just too time consuming to do a really good edit on it.

This book is an interesting book because Tim O'Brien speaks about how each individual soldier in the war reacts to the war. Tim was trying to amplify how a soldier in war know their teammate as much as their enemy. Tim thought about how there were different soldiers in different situations that would affect the ways they interacted with on another. For example, the section "Stockings" spoke specifically about a particular person and how he would have his girlfriend's panty hoes with him before he would go off and fight. he would rub it against his face so that he can remember is girlfriend. Overall the book was an okay book and Tim O'Brein made me think of wars from the point of view of the soldiers actually fighting in the war.

I have a very difficult time deciding which of Kay's books is my favorite. This is usually at the top of my list. "The Sarantine Mosaic" (two book series) is also right at the top of the list. Allegedly, there is a movie being made for this book. I am incredibly scared about that fact. It has potential to be so amazing, but it also has incredible potential to not be anything near to the book. I am worried.

If you're a fan of fairy tales and believe you're never too old to read one, then I can't recommend this to you more. It really is wonderful. Definitely reads like an earlier work of Gaiman, so if you're expecting the calibre of Anansi Boys or American Gods, you may be disappointed. It's not that kind of story. But it's really wonderful and sweet and enchanting. Be warned - from what I've seen of the movie (trailers, et al), I don't think they are covering the book completely faithfully. But we'll see.
