I really enjoy Joanne Harris' writing. This book held an element of mystery throughout, but I was a bit disappointed at the end. She certainly has a way of telling a story, though. Perhaps my reading Gentlemen and Players biased me, since that was truly amazing and anything else from her can hardly measure up!

AMAZING book!! I bought the book a few months ago at a small store for $3 because it was used. I bought the book mostly because it was about dating and I saw the name "Steve" lol. Plus..I've never read a book on a lesbian relationship and I was intrigued. It was definetly different from what I usually read and the book contained just enough info to not make me feel too uncomfortable. I loved the relationship of Nina & Steve because it was a distance love and reminded me a lot of me & my boyfriend's relationship. I didn't want the book to end because it was so great...but the ending was sort of disappointing and kind of left me hanging. It was still a GREAT book though and I recommend it to anyone who likes romance/comedic novels!!!

Despite the misleading title conjuring up English home-county suburbia, this is a carefully elaborated saga of a Greek immigrant family in Detroit dealing with such issues as the American dream, racism, genocide, secrecy, guilt, religious superstition, gender and sex roles. Powerful characters and an excellent read.
There's some really good stuff in here. I like how the author tries to reach out to people of all ages and with various levels of emotional baggage. On the other hand, I didn't like the "everything happens for a reason" mentality that kept sneaking into otherwise sound advise. There's also a lot of deism that the book would have been better off without.

Janette Oke's books were among the first Christian romantic fiction books that I read-as a preteen/young teenager. This series in particular is probably my favorite of hers.

Loved, loved, loved this book! The characters were well developed, the plot line had unexpected twists and turns (i.e. it wasn't predictable), and the storyline was interesting...I definitely recommend this to anyone who likes Christian historical fiction.

WRITING STYLE: 2.5 PLOT: 2.5 PROTAGONIST: 3 CAPTURED MY INTEREST: 2.5 OVERALL: 2.5 This book was chosen for last months SLC Library's teen book club. I was hoping to like it because I'm such a YA fan. This is one of those books where you need to delve into spoilers to really review it. . . . . . . . . . . . . First off I can see why it was chosen for literary awards. It's stream of consciousnesses writing which didn't bother me as much as I thought it would. There's run on sentences and barely any punctuation. It's a little disconcerting at first but you get used to it. You really see the point when at the end of the book all of a sudden there is punctuation - it has it's intended point of letting the reader know that something has changed for Daisy. The book also "addresses" some challenging issues. I put that in quotes because I personally think the book does a POOR job of addressing these issue. Yeah Rosoff brings up incest and anorexia but she doesn't help the reader understand it all all. It's just what it is and I think as a teen that would be confusing. Personally as someone who has always had weight/food issues this book made me NOT want to eat which I think is the opposite of what a YA book should do. The incest was even worse - at least Daisy recovered from her anorexia - she's still in love with her cousin and it's never looked analysed or condemned. It's simply ok. Besides that it was pretty unbelievable to think that Daisy and Piper could have survived and functioned they way they did. It was too much of a stretch for me. Add to that that the lover is named Edmond and can read minds. And really the book was unbearably slow until at least half way through. Overall it's not a YA book I'd recommend to really anyone.

Read this for a required intro to environmental analysis and design course. This novel taught me about the side of the law system we don't see much of, how torts work. It showed how difficult it is to prove that a party is guilty and how long it may take.

i loved the premise of this book. Thought it was well written albeit sad and the reader knows the outcome. I found myself yearning to re-read Hemingway.
