I believe this is one of the first novels that Joy Fielding wrote, if not THE first one. Having read all her other novels, it's easy to see how her writing has matured and improved over the years. Nonetheless, this novel was written in her usual "page turning" style. "People are inexplicably disappearing from Chicago prosecutor Jess Koster's life. First her mother vanished without a trace eight years ago. And now a client, the victim of a brutal, sadistic rapist, is also missing. اگرچه سوزان سونتاگ در ایران بیشتر به یک منتقد ادبی و اجتماعی نویس معروف است، و در این زمینه ها کارهای بزرگی تالیف کرده، اما رمان های سونتاگ کارهای زیبایی ست که ندیده یا نشنیده ام به فارسی ترجمه شده باشد. روشن نیست چرا بجز چند مقاله، آثار او به فارسی برگردانده نشده. سوزان سونتاگ از روشنفکران آمریکایی دهه ی 1960 است، با همان دید رادیکال نسبت به جوامع غربی. بعدها به شکلی از آمریکا زده شد و به تبعیدی خودخواسته به اروپا، سوئد و بعدن فرانسه رفت. سال های اقامت سونتاگ در اروپا یادآور زندگی بسیاری از نویسندگان نسل پیش از او هم چون همینگوی است که بخشی از دوران جوانی و میانسالی شان را در اروپا و عمدتن فرانسه گذراندند. اگرچه سونتاگ در میان دانشگاهیان و در رسانه ها بیشتر به یک روشنفکر نق نقو و ایرادگیر معروف است، با این همه نمی توان از نقش او به عنوان یک زن نویسنده در روند تفکر دایره ی روشنفکری آمریکایی ها چشم پوشید.

Equally sympathetic to both halves of the Iranian society. One of the most balanced and least prejudiced works by a young Iranian journalist that I have ever read. I read the old version (lots of minor typos) and the new edition came out with an extra chapter and a new title (something about a soul!).

I first noticed this book because the cover caught my eye at Target. When I realized it was a new Michelle Moran book, I put myself on the list for it at the library right away! The material for this novel is fascinating--it tells the story of the woman who would become Madame Tussaud, the name behind the famous wax museums all over the world. Her name was originally Marie Grosholtz, and she and her uncle were wax sculptors during the French Revolution. They ran an exhibition of wax figures depicting important figures of the day, including Marie Antoinette, politicians like Jefferson and Robespierre, and criminals like the Marquis de Sade. This was how a lot of the commoners of Paris kept up with current events and since there were no TVs or photographs, it was their opportunity to see famous figures in a life-like form. Then, once the Revolution started spiraling out of control, Marie was called on to make death masks of the so-called "traitors" that were sent to the guillotine. As always, Moran does fantastic storytelling in a historical context. In addition to the insane events of the Revolution itself, there were so many interesting details, like how they had to be constantly changing the figures in their exhibition to reflect the changing politics and the feelings of the commoners. I do think Moran tends to sacrifice character development for plot--I felt like I wanted more of a connection with Marie, especially because I've read so much Sharon Kay Penman and she has such a gift for making you feel so strongly about the characters. However, Moran does an excellent job capturing the chaos, paranoia, and terror of the Revolution. It's an easy read and one that kept me fascinated throughout.

a solid book, though better to read it when you'll have someone to discuss it with after. i thought some of her descriptions were great, but you could see the author through them. also, some of orthodox jewish stuff wasn't terribly accurate or likely.
