John Wesley Powell is an interesting person. And Wallace Stegner has a way with words (some of them made-up, as far as I can tell). His descriptions of Powell's running of the Colorado are wonderful. And Stegner's contention that Powell and this era had a profound impact on the western US seems well founded. And Stegner's observations in 1953 (when the book was published) as the US emerged from the Depression and WWII with building and development that dramatically changed the west are a lesson in themselves. BUT...this is not a "popular" history book and Stegner includes some distracting tangential information. Stegner seems to assume a knowledge of historical figures that have not crossed my path before. He includes a section on who named what physical features and who they were named after. He also has quite a dissertation on who drew/painted/photographed the Grand Canyon. Neither of these sections adds much to Powell's story. His using Gawain and the Round table as a metaphor for betrayal is fine. But to use Walter Murray Gibson as an example of an impostor leaves all but historians of the LDS Church or the Kingdom of Hawaii in the dark. I would have liked a bit more on Powell's personal life. His wife disappears from the story early (and I think pregnant)only to be mentioned again as Powell retires. But there is much "meat" here for thought about the federal government's role in science and its application to federal policies.

Very dense, but interesting. I confess to skimming through parts. My main takeaway message was that factory organic farming is not much better than factory conventional farming. But, there are better ways to do things.

I wasn't sure at first about the correspondence (letters and some telegrams) only means of telling this story, but soon I came to enjoy it and think it was an excellent means of revealing things in mostly but not completely chronological order. Lots of finesse that way. Told this way the tone was also great, showing the characters personalities off both from their own perspectives and those of their friends and neighbors who mention them. A lovely tale of love, friendship, values, personal development, it takes place shortly after WWII and highlights the occupation of the english channel islands. Loved all the characters both eccentric and ordinary, especially the protagonist Juliet and her new family she finds: quiet husband Dawsey (to whom she had to propose) and adopted daughter Kit, whose brave mother died in a concentration camp after defending a fellow prisoner. Quick read enjoyable but not impossible to put down (that can be good sometimes, no?).

In my opinion definitely the best Jane Austen work - for starters it actually has in intelligent narrative that deals with something else apart from the 19th century woman's obsession with getting hooked up with a rich bloke! The post-colonial angle was quite interesting, specially coming from an author famous for having resided her ivory tower and not reflected any of the contemporary political history in her works!

A really inspiring account of Angela Davis' philosophical and political evolution into a revolutionary, militant Black Panther. Davis is one of the few activists that has successfully managed to balance her commitment to the overlapping causes of anti-racism, feminism, and communism and hearing the full story of how she blossomed into an American hero can be very thrilling. I remember have a strong urge to give my life to the cause immediately after reading it. One of my favorite parts of the book, however, is listening to her gush about German philosophers like Hegel. Her life encourages me to believe that the distance between the academy and real-world political action might not be as wide as it often seems.
Star Wars just isn't Star Wars w/o Darth Vader.

All I can say after reading this massive tome is that Mr. Gitlin's sixties were different from mine! I guess I was one of those people he talks about who took no interest in politics and wandered off in search of themselves. Not such a bad thing to do Todd, really! That being said, if you want a reasonable history of the SDS by someone who was involved in it then this is probably your book.

One of my favorite Vonnegut works besides maybe Slapstick, the story is told under the science fiction umbrella but has some heady ideas about life and reality that leave you thinking long after you read it.
