My favorite modern novel. There's a certain image that I always remember when I think of the book; "can angels lie spine to spine? If not, how they must envy us humans....."

This was a hot and steamy book found at the Christian book store. Very good read...

I love the flow of this book. I love the dialogue, which I don't think is simplistic or stereotypical (and if anyone was an authority, Hurston would be--check out her mythologies). And I like "watching" Janie as she gains wisdom and gets comfortable with herself.

My favorite of the Tolkein world. The story, the illustrations, it's all beautiful!

Star Rangers by Andre Norton In a post galactic apocalypse, the Star Rangers, the former peace keepers find their true home and look forward to reestablishing galactic peace. I mentioned in my last review how Norton does a wonderful job examining motivation and behavior. She paints honorable protagonists and sinister villains. She shows the evils of intolerance and the benefits of integration when racial inequities were still common place in our own nation. The galactic empire was dissolving into anarchy. Without support the Star Rangers continued to try and keep the peace but without resources and support their efforts were futile. This book depicts a small band of rangers and demonstrates their ability to shape their own destiny and to maintain honor and integrity in trying circumstances. A mixed band of extraterrestrials solidifies even further when faced with a talented bigot. Sergeant Kartr is the center of the fray and shows his tolerance and acceptance clearly. Once again, Norton demonstrates her readability and sustainability, this book was first published in 1953 and certainly has survived the test of time. I strongly recommend the book!

My 2 year old niece adores this book. She loves the repetition, she's currently learning her animals so she responds to all that vocabulary, and she loves monkeys! You know who else loves those things? All children everywhere. That's why this book is so wonderful.
best coffee table book ever.

The book traces a group of girls who are recent college grads through their twenties. Girls in White Dresses is written in the first person with different characters who are all friends narrating each chapter. Jobs, families, where to live, friendship, boyfriends, and later husbands and children are the main focal points of these girls. Their lives are discussed using how they are felling and what they they are doing at that moment to further the story. While it may seem like a superficial read since many times the why is not discussed, I feel as though it is a story which most women in their twenties feel as though they are living. Many times it is hard to explain the why when they themselves do not understand it. As I read the book I kept relating to them and realized the book is really a discussion of adulthood.

I read these out of order (#2 first) and although I really liked it, I liked the 2nd one better. Once again, though, I appreciated that it's appropriate for the YA reader without the gratuitous sex and profanity.
