It happened when they were at the Isles of Wonder, designed to be the “ultimate theme park.” For them it would soon be their home. When a mysterious, genetically engineered virus kill all the adults and older teens, the younger teens, children, and infants, have to find a way to live in a world with no parents or any other adult. They have to recreate their own world and new lives. For Josh and his little sister Maddie this means creating their new life where the old one had abruptly ended in the Isles of Wonder Amusement Park. As the older kids come to terms with the tragedy, they begin to organize and follow the charismatic Milo who steps up as the leader of the Isles along with a core group of kids who volunteer to help him. They create borders and try to protect the Isles from those from the outside who would try to steal what the surviving islanders have. As time progresses, Josh, his new friend Zoe and some of the other islanders begin to wonder if there are other reasons the core insists that they shouldn’t venture out of the Isles. This novel was terrifying. In a sense it was a modern Lord of the Flies. The thought of infants and small children suddenly left to be raised by older brothers and in some cases complete strangers was a difficult concept. At the same time it was a book that was very hard for me to put down. I had to know what would happen next. I recommend this to anyone who likes books about survival, dystopian futures, or is looking for a quick read. Cautions for sensitive readers: In the very beginning of this book all the adults die and the kids have to organize the burials for all of the dead while this is not explicitly described it is referred to. There is also violence in this novel. As the teens get older they do form families, and some sex is referred to although there are no explicit details.

The story started slow and then moved to fast for my liking. Luke came at first as a selfish man, even though you could see the underlying caring he felt for Gracie. Gracie came at first as a little dumb, since she couldn't find a man to suit her needs so she kept picking the wrong men. Wes feelings weren't even approached. Aside of that the basic idea of the story was good. I really liked it.

Heartbreaking and wonderful. Leaves me with so many feelings to sort out. And now I must reread Little Women to look at Marmee anew.

I enjoyed all of the stories about the circus life. I suspect that was facilitated by my lack of experience with or knowledge of the setting. I like that Sara Gruen describes things by induction. (e.g., describing consequences or collateral indicators, rather than directly stating things.) However... she overreached by choosing a male protagonist. Why is this bad? Because she, nonetheless, makes her character's perspectives on sex and romance, at least, incredibly non-male.

I had been meaning to read this book for a long time but somehow never got around to it until a couple of years ago. Since then, I've reread it at least four times and it never seems to lose its beauty for me. The language is compelling but also challenging - while most of the book flows beautifully, some of its best parts are the ones which command you to slow down and take your time. People easily put off by difficult topics (pedophilia, kidnapping) or florid, "literary" language will probably not fall into this one but it's still worth a try. Humbert Humbert's narrative is one of the most real, well-crafted and brilliant narratives of probably any book of the 20th Century and it's so much fun to watch how Nabokov makes a fully dimensional, often sympathetic character out of an unsympathetic situation. Read it; It's dirty and ambitious and perfectly pulled together.
This book is fantastic. I am so awed by these chefs abilities to create. The techniques that they use, the techniques they create, is inspiring. It is much less a cookbook and much more a book about creative expression. Now if I only had 200euro to eat there!

Strong historical fiction that really delves into the heart of the character.

This book centers on the idea that one choice can change your entire life and the lives of everyone around it. It tracks the life of a man who gives up one of his newborn twins because she is born with Down Syndrome. The book follows the aftermath of this decision for 25 years. It started off a little slow but then I got really into it and then I just wanted it to end. It drags on and gets a little redundant with driving home the idea that this one choice changed everyone’s lives. Overall I enjoyed and would recommend it if you like lifetime movies.

This is a tough book to say "I liked" but it was a fascinating read, and one of the few books that I've read that gave me real nightmares. (I've read quite a bit of horror so that's saying something). You get a glimpse of the charisma that Charles Manson apparently possessed in his ability to influence those in his "family", and it's hard to imagine that anyone can revere him as they do after reading this, but there are those that do. The telling of the story was compelling enough that I did read other Bugliosi novels after, as I found him to be quite good at telling the story of real crime dramas.
