Who knew Ross Perot wasn't just your average Presidential candidate but also a hero? Good read.

Slow to start. The last third of the book is a rollercoaster!! It's good to see this part of Rachels life coming to a close, the culmination of character growth and the lack of choices in what Rachel has done to survive is superbly written and makes you wonder just what is going to happen next.. I for one cannot wait for the next installment to see exactly where Miss Harrison takes this series.

Not bad. Better than The Boyfriend List, not as good and The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks.

The writing quality was good - and that is really the best that I can say for this novel. Set in WWII in the island of Guernsey, a woman begins a relationship with a German soldier and then is put in a situation where she helps a prisoner in a work camp. The "angle" of this is that she must make this big decision or choice - but it never really materializes. In fact, her emotions throughtout the book are muted and minimal for the weight of what would have really been occuring. I guess superficial is the what I would call it. She says she feels guilty about sleeping with the German soldier repeatedly, but never really shows in her actions that she feels guilty about it. She feels protective for her children but doesn't really change her own actions in order to secure her children. I just never believed this character so I didn't really care what happened to her or the people around her. Her emotions and actions were non-realistic. But the writing is quite deft. The uninteresting story was told well and was well crafted. I just didn't care.

I greatly enjoy reading books about the inner workings of Hollywood, not specifically from the actor/producer standpoint, but from the less hot-shot and A list people like writers, cameramen, or even just critics. William Goldman's "Who Killed Hollywood" is one of my favorite books and one I always refer to when thinking about movies. And for this reason I picked up Bambi vs. Godzilla. While I have seen some of David Mamet's movies before, this is my fist experience with his writing. I know the man is a good writer, but he flaunts this fact often throughout the first and last third of the book, using incredibly cryptic phrases, flowery paragraphs, and incessantly verbose thought patterns. For such a proponent of "getting to the point," he doesn't follow his own advice. The best parts of the book are when he's talking about the thing he knows best: writing a story. For this section, the book is a must read, as it explains the duties of a writer from a master of the craft. However, when he went into the general business of the movie industry, he lost focus often and delved mostly into toothless bitching. Mamet is a wonderful cynic and can teach all inspiring cynics a trick or two, but his anger and vehemence feels misdirected and chained. He might be trying to burn some bridges, but isn't ready to light the first match. And for that, I cannot wholly recommend this book, except as an unbalanced attempt at sticking it to the big wigs in Hollywood. If you like that sort of thing, give it a try. Otherwise, it's merely ok.

loooved!
I did not really enjoy this book. It was hard to get through without much of a payoff. A lot of people say it's genius, but I don't really see it - my taste in books is different than most people's, though.
What a fantastic, surreal, haunting, beautifully written book. I liked it more this time, 10 years after having first read it (maybe because since then I've visited Barcelona and read Zafon's other books?). The writing is gorgeous. The setting is memorable. The characters are occasionally ridiculous but mostly real and alive. And the Cemetery of Forgotten Books is a brilliant, mysterious, dreamlike wonderland.

I was a little leary about this book at the begining. I was surprised to find myself entertained and not wanting to put the book down. It was a quirky, fun read. The story is about Piper McCloud who is the girl who could fly. Piper finds out that she has talent for more things than just flying. I like that this was a "girl power" book and it reaches out to audiences of all ages. I have to agree with the review Stephenie Meyer gave the book which was something to the effect of Little House on the Prairie meets X-Men.
