I remember reading this for a college class. It is one of the saddest stories, but amazingly well written. Some of the parts are graphic and disturbing, but appropriate considering the topics.

I enjoyed this book enormously, which is fortunate since it is an enormous book. There are some technical architectural descriptions, as well as some sexually explicit scenes, but both seem appropriate given the historical context of the time period. Maybe I'm one of the last readers on earth to formally denounce the neat and tidy happy ending, but I still love it (in a well-written novel, that is). Call me a sap if you want to, but to me there is nothing more satisfying than having everything work out just right in the end, with all the loose ends tucked away. Can't wait to read more by Follett.

I read all the Ian Fleming James Bond novels in middle school and high school, and this year decided to revisit a few. FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE was the second James Bond adventure to be adapted for film, and it's interesting to compare the movie to the book. Already at this early stage in the film franchise, the filmmakers were expanding and elaborating on Fleming's comparatively modest plots -- the opposite of what happens to most novels in their translation to the screen. Later films were adapted so freely that there's not much to recognize from Fleming's books except the titles. I'm fascinated with the process by which a potboiler like this helps spawn an enormously lucrative entertainment franchise. But if you're not, don't go out of your way to read FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE. It's more interesting as an artifact than as literature.
L amgistralidad de los cuentos de terror de Lovecraft lo colocan en la literatura como un importante exponenete del género por la atmósfera de sus historias y lo espeluznante de sus tramas.

I like her writing. She is graphic, so if you don't like to talk about dead bodies this might not be a choice. I going to read Bonk next

Interesting but somewhat unbelievable and sensationalised.

The book is a fantastic biography that captures an amazing amount of nuance to her character. I was drawn to the subject after watching HBO's superb miniseries on Elizabeth. Listening to the interviews after the film, I was left with the impression that they had cut a lot of corners, historically speaking. However, after reading this work, I was left with the conclusions that HBO's sins were only those of ommission. They give short shrift to a number of Elizabeth's pets. But, even Sommerset's work pays more attention to Leister and Essex. Even when Elizabeth's motivates and moods seem less than noble, you cannot help admiring the cunning of this woman. She took a country on the verge of collapse -- a European backwater -- and transformed it into one of the most significant countries in Europe, and its most important maritime power. All the while, she also was dealing with dangers from Puritans and Catholics, Scotts and Spaniards, the Netherlands and Ireland. It is an amazing political symphony conducted with such a deft hand, its hard to imagine anyone else pulling it off. Sommerset's prose is engrossing and even though this tomb is think, I enjoyed it from word one. B&N had this out at clearance for $5. If you have any interest in the period, I highly recommend you grab a copy.

A really great book! It was like Water for Elephants in that the writing and the characters were very good, the story was interesting, but it wasn't so heart-wrenching that it was hard to read. (I did get a little misty-eyed though.) Having the dog narrate the story allowed for some funny and off-beat commentary. I really enjoyed it, even (especially?) with the racing theme. It was also nice to read a book about a guy, written by a guy, with a male narrative.

This may be my favorite cookbook of all time. It's chock-full of tons and tons of great recipes and ideas and Heidi's signature gorgeous photos. It's so well laid-out--she'll have a category, like rice bowls or stir-fry or quesadillas, and then give all the steps and a couple pages of recipes on that theme laid-out in the smartest, most intuitive and user-friendly way ever, along with ideas for stuff to try on your own. And, all the recipes are really simple, healthy and, most importantly, delicious!
